Der Begriff Hospiz ("Hospes": Gast, Gastgeber) war traditionell eine Herberge - nicht ausschließlich für Sterbende, sondern oft für Reisende, Bedürftige, Gäste. Im Mai 1934 fand in dem damaligen Hospiz Baseler Hof ein Treffen führender evangelischer Theologen und Kirchenvertreter statt, um gegen die Gleichschaltung der Kirche unter dem NS-Regime Stellung zu beziehen.
