Euro-Kai wurde gegründet 1961 durch Kurt Eckelmann (1916-94, Urenkel von Cordt Eckelmann), der binnen weniger Jahre das bedeutendste deutsche Containerterminal aufbaute. Sein Nachfolger Thomas Eckelmann machte daraus das größte eignergeführte Hafenunternehmen Europas, das neben Hamburg und Bremerhaven heute auch Containerterminals in La Spezia, Cagliari, Ravenna, Salerno (Italien), Lissabon (Portugal), Tanger (Marokko), Limassol (Zypern) und Bandar Abbas (Iran) betreibt. Seit 1999 werden die Terminals in Bremerhaven und Hamburg und seit 2012 auch der JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven zu je 50 % gemeinsam mit der landeseigenen BLG Logistics Group (Bremer Lagerhaus-Gesellschaft) über die Eurogate GmbH & Co.
