Die Bahn diente ursprünglich dem Anschluß von Kohlegruben und Montanwerken im Westmoreland County östlich von Pittsburgh, Pa. Später bediente sie das 1978 in unfertigem Zustand von Chrysler übernommene VOLKSWAGEN-Montagewerk Westmoreland, das nach Rolls-Royce (1921-31 in Springfield, Mass.) die erste Autofabrik eines ausländischen Herstellers überhaupt in den USA war. Das Werk, das in seinen Glanzzeiten 6.000 Beschäftigte hatte, produzierte rd. 1,15 Mio. Golf-Varianten bis zur Schließung 1987, nachdem die VW-Verkäufe in den USA seit 1980 um 60 % gesunken waren.
