Jh. erkannte der Kartenzeichner Augustine Hermann, daß die Delmarva Peninsula, die den Deleware River von der Chesapeake Bay trennt, nur gut 20 km breit ist und ein Kanal die Route von Wilmington und Philadelphia nach Baltimore an der Chesapeake Bay um rd. 500 km abkürzen würde. Doch erst Ende des 18. Jh. gewann die Idee eines Kanalbaus an Fahrt, ein wichtiger Fürsprecher dabei war Benjamin Franklin. Endlich 1829 konnte die Eröffnung des Kanals bekannt gegeben werden, der mit 3,5 Mio. $ Baukosten eines der teuersten Bauprojekte der damaligen Zeit gewesen war.
