Die Hauptstrecke von New York durch das Tal des Lehigh River bis zum Lake Ontario und Lake Erie, damals eine der am stärksten befahrenen Strecken der USA, nannte man auch „Route of the Black Diamond“, da die Züge hauptsächlich Anthrazit-Kohle transportierten. Das Streckennetz erreichte in der Spitze bald 1.400 Meilen Länge. Erst 1976 endete mit der Fusion mit Conrail die Eigenständigkeit. Die Ursprungsstrecke, die Lehigh Line, ist bis heute erhalten, führt aber an ihren beiden Endpunkten in Buffalo und New York nicht mehr bis in die Stadtzentren hinein.
