Morse, der in dieser Ges. mehrere Küstenschiffahrtslinien vereinigte, die er über Jahre auf Pump zusammengekauft hatte (u.a. Clyde Line, Mallory Line, Eastern Steaship Co. sowie New York & Porto Rico Line). Seine Absicht, mit diesem Quasi-Kartell die Preise bestimmen zu können, schlug fehl: Gegen ein dutzend von Eisenbahngesellschaften beherrschte Konkurrenten kam er nicht an.
