Die AG fungierte zunächst als Holding, übernahm aber ab Jan. 1986 maßgebliche Teile des Großhandelsgeschäftsbetriebes selbst. Ende 1998 machte der Verkauf des Einzelhandelsgeschäfts (ohne Lebensmittelfilialen) an den amerikanischen Giganten Wal-Mart Schlagzeilen. Seitdem biß sich der französische Einzelhandels-Gigant Intermarché (ITM) als Großaktionär an der Sanierung des restlichen SPAR-Geschäfts so ziemlich die Zähne aus.
