place: | West Virginia | | Picture: |  | | Number: | 57 | | Info: | Die 1865 gegründete Ges. erschloß ein Grahamit-Vorkommen im Ritchie County in West Virginia, wo das auch als Pyrobitumen oder Anthraxolit bekannte mit Bitumen imprägnierte Gestein vorkommt (weitere Vorkommen in Oklahoma, Mexico und Kuba). Das feste Kohlenwasserstoffbitumen hat einen hohen Festkohlenstoffgehalt von 35-55 % und eine hohe Schmelztemparatur. Dem Asphalt ähnlich, welcher aus Erdöl durch Sauerstoffaufnahme entsteht, wobei die leichtflüchtigen Bestandteile verdunsten. Das Vorkommen in West Virginia wurde erstmals 1863 von Prof. J. P. Lesley beschrieben. Den Namen Grahamit schuf in Würdigung des an der bis 1874 betriebenen Mine maßgeblich beteiligten James Lorimer Graham der New Yorker Chemiker Henry Wurtz, der 1865 für die Ritchie Mineral Resin and Oil Co. einen „Report upon a mineral formation in West Virginia“ verfasste. James Lorimer Graham hat diesen Bond als Trustee auch original unterschrieben. Kohlenwasserstoffe in diversen Ausprägungen traten beiderseits der B&O-Strecke nach Parkersburg südlich des Ohio River teilweise offen zu Tage, was zu so einprägsamen Namen wie Loreta Oil Pool und Volcano Oil Pool führte, auch eine Bahnstation an der B&O RR im Ritchie County hieß „Petroleum“. | | Specials: | Mit schöner detailreicher Vignette. | | Condition: | VF. | | Sold: | unsold |
