Neben der Hauptstrecke Savannah-Atlanta, Ga. (294 Meilen) wurden über 20 weitere Strecken betrieben, insgesamt war das Netz fast 2.000 Meilen lang. 1907 erlangte der Eisenbahnmagnat E. H. Harriman die Aktienmehrheit, die er 1909 an die ebenfalls von ihm kontrollierte Illinois Central verkaufte. In der Great Depression gerieg die CofG 1932 in Konkurs, das Verfahren wurde erst 1948 beendet. Auf der Suche nach einem Zugang zu Atlantik-Häfen erwarb 1956 die St. Louis-San Francisco Ry. die Aktienmehrheit, doch eine Fusion wurde von der Interstate Commerce Commission untersagt. So kam die CofG 1963 schließlich zur Southern Ry.
