Nach ein paar Monaten Pferdebahnbetrieb startete auf der 17 Meilen langen Strecke Portsmouth-Suffolk, Va. zwei Zugpaare täglich mit Dampftraktion. 1853 bekam die P&R in Weldon Anschluß an die Raleigh & Gaston RR, die sie sogleich aufkaufte und damit auch die Kontrolle über deren Tochter Raleigh & Augusta Air-Line RR erlangte. Damit tauchte hier zum ersten Mal die „Air Line“ im Firmennamen auf. Von den Florida-Vorgängern war die 1860 gegründete Florida, Atlantic & Gulf Central RR die älteste. Nach heftigen Zerstörungen im amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg erholten sich die Bahnen schnell wieder. 1881 koordinierten sie ihre Arbeit im „Seaboard Air Line System“. 1900 wurden inzwischen 19 zur Gruppe gehörende Bahnen in der Seaboard Air Line Ry. zusammengeschlossen (in der Panik von 1907 zusammengebrochen, 1915 als RR reorganisiert). 1925 erreichte das SAL-Streckennetz mit fast 4.000 Meilen seine größte Ausdehnung, selbst Durchgangszüge von New York (ab da erst einmal auf PRR-Gleisen, ab Richmond auf eigenen) nach Tampa hatte man im Programm. 1967 mit dem jahrzehntelangen Erzrivalen Atlantic Coast Line RR fusioniert zur Seaboard Coast Line RR.
