Simon Lake (1866-1945), Schiffsingenieur, Erfinder, baute das erste vollfunktionstüchtige Unterseeboot der Geschichte (Argonaut). Ab 1911 belieferte er auch die US-Navy mit seinen Torpedo-U-Booten. Zu seinen vielen Erfindungen (Lake besaß über 200 Patente) gehörte u.a. auch eine Vorrichtung zur Bergung gesunkener Schiffe. Die Lake Torpedo Boat Co. besaß auch die Aktienmehrheit der Tochtergesellschaften in England, Deutschland, Italien und Russland.
