Die Stummfilme kamen vornehmlich aus Deutschland und Japan, Filme im Lande selbst drehten amerikanische und japanische Firmen. 1923 wurde die Min-sing-Gesellschaft (Stern) als erste nationale Produktionsfirma gegründet, 1931 entstand der erste Tonfilm, 1936 das Zentralstudio in Nanking. Tschangscha, Hauptstadt der vor allem an Kohle reichen Provinz Hunan in Südchina, erhielt in den 40er Jahren ein großartiges Kinotheater, das “Silvery White Palace Theatre”, das seinen Namen von der Farbe der Marmorkuppel hatte, die dem amerikanischen Capitol nachgebildet war.
