Unter der Leitung des Konstrukteurs und Rennfahrers Parry Thomas wurde 1920-22 ein luxuriöser Achtzylinder-Personenwagen hergestellt, der gegen Rolls-Royce konkurrieren sollte. Der Leyland Eight war der teuerste Wagen Englands und wurde nur 18 mal gebaut; anschließend konzentrierte man sich bei Leyland wieder ausschließlich auf das Nutzfahrzeuggeschäft. Erst 1961 faßte Leyland wieder auf dem Personenwagensektor Fuß durch die Übernahme von Standard und Triumph. 1967 verschmolz die Gruppe mit der British Motor Holding (Austin, Morris, MG, Riley, Wolseley, Jaguar, Daimler) sowie Rover und Alvis zur British Leyland Motor Corp. (BLMC), die ab 1975 als British Leyland Ltd.
