place: | Leyden | | Picture: |  | | Info: | In der Stadt Leyden wurde das älteste Krankenhaus 1276 gegründet, das spätere St. Catharina Krankenhaus. 1421 bekam es einen eigenen Friedhof. Im Laufe der Jahre wurde das Krankenhaus, das ursprünglich für arme Leute geschaffen wurde, immer mehr vergrössert. Es bekam eine Küche, eine Brauerei, betrieb Milchwirtschaft. Am 12. November 1573 wurde das Hospital von St. Catharinen sogar autorisiert Kupfermünzen zu prägen. 1773 wurde es vereinigt mit dem Elisabeth-Krankenhaus.
