William L. Holman, Besitzer der Holman Locomotive Co., baute ab 1883 in Zusammenarbeit mit der J. Hammond Car Co., San Francisco Loks und Waggons für Pferde-, Seil und Elektrobahnen. 1887 konstruierte er in Philadelphia den Prototyp einer neuartigen Lokomotive, die von den Fachpresse sehr negativ beurteilt wurde. Das zusätzlich unter den Rädern angebrachte Getriebe (siehe Darstellung der Lok auf der Aktie) würde durch zusätzliche Reibung die Lokomotive eher verlangsamen! Der Erfinder ließ sich nicht beirren und mit der Gründung seiner Holman Locomotive Speeding Truck Co. hielt er an seinen Produktionsplänen fest. Am 15.10.1897 konnte er eine von der renommierten Baldwin Locomotive Works gebaute Holman-Lokomotive dem staunenden Publikum auf einer gerade Teilstrecke der South Jersey Railroad Co. vorführen. Anscheinend verliefen die Feldversuche nicht erfolgreich, da keine Holman-Loks mehr gebaut wurden.
