Das Gründungskapital von 600 Mio. ptas. brachten auf zu 51% das staatliche Industrieinstitut Instituto Nacional de Industria, zu 42% zeichneten spanische Banken, Fiat beteiligte sich mit 7%. Das Werk bei Barcelona wurde am 5.6.1953 eröffnet, am 13.11.1953 lief der erste SEAT vom Band. In den ersten Jahrzehnten baute SEAT ausschließlich in Lizenz Fahrzeuge von FIAT nach und war damit auf dem spanischen Markt, der bis in die 1970er Jahre durch hohe Importzölle geschützt war, mit Abstand Marktführer. 1983 kommt es zum Bruch mit FIAT, weil SEAT den mit dem FIAT Ritmo baugleichen Ronda als eigenständiges spanisches Modell ausgibt. Anschließend unterzeichnet SEAT ein Kooperationsabkommen mit Volkswagen, aus dem sich bald eine 75 %ige Beteiligung von VW entwickelt.
