Das niedersächsische Adelsgeschlecht Münchhausen erschien 1183 auf der gleichnamigen Burg am Steinhuder Meer bei Kloster Loccum. Es teilte sich Mitte des 13. Jh. in eine weiße und eine schwarze Linie. Den meisten Zweigen wurde seit 1861 die Führung des Freiherrentitels zuerkannt.
