Info:Die Konzession für die Bahn erteilte die braunschweigische Regierung am 16.4.1870 und die preußische Regierung am 8.7.1870. Die wichtigsten Strecken waren: Halberstadt-Blankenburg (18,8 km, eröffnet 1873), Blankenburg-Tanne (kombinierte Adhäsions- und Zahnradbahn mit 26,6 km, sukzessive eröffnet bis 1886) sowie Blankenburg-Quedlinburg mit Abzweig nach Thale (20,5 km, eröffnet 1907). Die wegen ihrer Steigungen sehr anspruchsvollen Gebirgsstrecken wurden von namhaften Lokomotivfabriken (u.a. Borsig) besonders gern für Versuchsfahrten genutzt. Anschlüsse bestanden in Tanne an die Südharz-Eisenbahn und in Drei-Annen-Hohne an die Harzquerbahn. Für die ständigen Erweiterungen der Bahnanlagen hatte die Gesellschaft zwischen 1874 und 1920 insgesamt 10 Anleihen aufgelegt. Großaktionär der HBE war zuletzt die "Allgemeine Lokalbahn- und Kraftwerke-AG" (heute AGIV). Nachdem die HBE in der Ostzone 1946 entschädigungslos enteignet worden war, wurde zur Rettung des Westvermögens 1949 der Sitz wieder nach Braunschweig verlegt, wo er bei der Gründung schon einmal war. 1975 Umwandlung in eine GmbH und Sitzverlegung nach Frankfurt/Main. Heute werden die Strecken von der Connex Regiobahn GmbH betrieben.
