Diesen Beinamen bekam er, weil er während des Sezessionskrieges die Armee und später beim Bau der Kansas-Pacific-Railroad die Arbeiter mit Büffelfleisch versorgte - bis zu 300 Büffel erlegte er in einem Monat. Cody’s Karriere begann als Reiter beim legendären Pony-Express, später brachte er es bis zum Kavallerie-Offizier, schließlich organisierte er mit weiteren Geschäftspartnern eine Wild-West-Show, die 1883 zum ersten Mal in Omaha/Nebraska gezeigt wurde. Seine Tourneen mit diesem höchst erfolgreichen Unternehmen führten ihn 1887 auch nach Europa. In der Show spielten echte Indianer mit, zeitweise sogar der berühmte Häuptling “sitting bull”.
