Info:P. T. Barnum wurde am 5.7.1810 in Bethel, Connecticut als ältestes von 5 Kindern geboren und startete schon mit 12 den Verkauf von Lotterielosen. Mit 25 investierte er 1.000 $ für die Vermarktungsrechte an der angeblich 161 Jahre alten Joice Heth, die behauptete, die Amme von George Washington gewesen zu sein. Die erfolgreiche Vermarktung dieser “Sensation” war Barnums’ Start im Show-Business. Mit 60 gründete er P. T. Barnum’s Grand Travelling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan and Circus - zu der Zeit das größte Zirkusunternehmen der amerikanischen Geschichte. 1881 verband er sich mit James A. Bailey zum “Barnum & London Circus”. 1888 tourte die “Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth” erstmals durch Amerika. Barnum starb 1891, doch Bailey führte die Show zu neuen Höhen: 85 Güterwagen benötigte der Tross, mehr als 1000 Leute waren beschäftigt, 5 Bühnen und Menagen wurden unterhalten. Kurz zuvor, 1884, starteten die Ringling brothers (Alf, Al, Charles, John und Otto, später kamen noch Henry und “Gus” dazu) in Baraboo, Wisconsin ihren ersten Zirkus und waren bald als “Kings of the Circus World” bekannt. Sie tourten unter dem offiziellen Namen “Ringling Bros. United Monster Shows, Great Double Circus, Royal European Menagerie, Museum, Caravan, and Congress of Trained Animals” durch die Lande. 1907 (J. A. Bailey war im Frühjahr 1906 gestorben) übernahmen die Ringling Bros. ihren größen Konkurrenten Barnum & Bailey Circus. “The Greatest Show on Earth” hat bis heute nichts von ihrer Anziehungskraft verloren.
