Er gründete 1890 die zunächst in Tanga tätige Deutsch Ostafrikanische Seehandlung, bereitete anschließend Kaffee- und Kokosplantagen vor und gründete 1900 die Lindi-Handels- und Plantagen-Ges. (1904 umbenannt in Lindi Hinterlandgesellschaft). Sein Tatendrang führte zu immer neuen Gründungen, noch bevor er ein vorheriges Werk hatte vollenden können.
