Die American Quick Transit Steamship Co. wurde gegründet zum Zwecke des Baues von Dampfschiffen, um den Expressweg zwischen Montauk Point, Long Island und Milford Haven, in England zu befahren. Die alten Schiffe hatten nicht genug Kapazität für 1.Klasse-Passagiere und Express-Fracht. Für die Passage brauchte man nur noch 5 Tage. Fracht waren beispielsweise lebende Kühe und Eingefrorenes. Die Dampfschiffe bekamen ein neues Design, ein V-shaped-Boden, mehrere Etagen, ein oberes offenes Deck und fuhren mit einer größeren Geschwindigkeit. Mr. James Alexander, Agent von Cunard Steamship Co. war einer der ersten Personen, die in dem neuen Geschäft engagiert war.
