Info:Den Anstoß zur Gründung 1895 unter Führung des Bankhauses Sal. Oppenheim jr. & Cie. als Deutsche Kolonial-Gesellschaft gab der Diplomat und Archäologe Max Frhr. von Oppenheim, der 1893 in Deutsch-Ostafrika in der Landschaft Ost-Usambara (dem heutigen Tansania) 15.000 ha Land erworben hatte. Das Grundkapital von 600.000 M zeichneten vor allem Kaufleute und Industrielle aus Köln und dem Rheinland. Das erworbene Terrain erwies sich zur Anlage der ursprünglich geplanten Kaffeeplantage als ungeeignet, weshalb es zu einem Landtausch mit der Deutsch-Ostafrikanischen Gesellschaft (DOAG) und anschließender Anlage der Kaffeeplantage Ngambo kam. Alle übrigen Aktivitäten (so Versuche zum Anbau von Kautschuk, Chinarinde und Sisal) blieben ebenso erfolglos wie die Montan-Gesellschaft mbH, die gemeinsam mit der DOAG nach Goldfunden in Usambara gegründet worden war. Als Folge des 1. Weltkrieges mussten die Pflanzungen 1920 den siegreichen Briten übergeben werden. Die vom Reich schließlich gezahlten Entschädigungen investierte die RHPG in Beteiligungen an anderen überseeischen Plantagen- und Handelsunternehmen. Letzter Vorstand bei Kriegsende war der später der “Bankier Adenauers” genannte Robert Pferdmenges.
